My love for makeup goes beyond my love for creativity and art. I find such deep happiness for the beautiful packaging and unique components. Makeup is more than products, it is my collection. Nothing drives me further into an irresistible desire to spend money than an eyeshadow palette with a unique and colorful component.
At my last job, we were all required to tape up pictures of what drove us to be successful. Some people posted pictures of their kids or beach vacations. Some put up pictures of cash money. I posted a picture of my husband, my dog, and my dream beauty room. I have always wanted my own space for my makeup. For me it is more than just organization. It is about display and design.
Pinterest was my obsession where I could scroll through picture after picture and marvel at the stark white vanities and bright led bulbs surrounding a perfectly placed mirror.
I know I am not alone in this.
If you are like me and have been dreaming of an in-home beauty room to call your own, you have stumbled upon the right place. Today I will open my beauty room to all of you and share the furniture I used, the layout, and organization pieces that help tie it all together.
I do want to mention that I did not buy all of this at once. I designed my beauty room piece by piece and added items as I went. It can be overwhelming when you first start designing your space and you may be tempted to splurge beyond your means to complete your project in one sitting, but I encourage you not to do that.
For one, there is little satisfaction in over spending. I can look at my studio now and feel really good about how beautiful it is and still feel good about the amount of money that I invested in it. You don’t want to over spend and feel regret when you look at that $1,500.00 vanity. Now if you can afford, girl go ahead! But I can’t lol.
Second, you may change your mind about what pieces you want once you start putting everything together. I thought I had a solid plan on my original design, but once I built my desk, I changed my mind. Take your time and really think your plan out. Your finished design will be well worth the way.
If you are excited to learn how to create your own beauty room on a budget, let’s get started!

First, let us begin with the desk. I recommend purchasing your desk first and the one I purchased is this Micke Desk from IKEA. This desk retails for $79.00 and is about 56″ long which allows for 2 very large drawers for storage. I love IKEA products, like most. The main problem with IKEA is the shipping/ delivery charges, which seem to fluctuate quite often. I was able to buy my desk and shelves (which we’ll talk about in a moment) and the shipping was reasonable. Since then, I’ve noticed that shipping can sometimes be over $300 for one item which is just insane.
If you are having trouble with the shipping charges, the desk is sometimes available on Amazon from resellers. The purchase price for the desk is usually higher than IKEA, but the with reasonable shipping, you’ll still come out ahead.
The next item is quite possibly the most common vanity accessory, the IKEA Lack Wall Unit. These retail for a very affordable $49.00 from IKEA.
The same shipping issue applies to these shelves so check you may also order them from Amazon.
I chose to put both units together rather than placing one on either side of the desk as it is commonly displayed.
I picked up some clear acrylic organizers from Amazon to hold my lipsticks, foundations, concealers, eyeliners, and such. The great thing about these units is they are very versatile and can be used for just about anything.
I also purchased a bundle of acrylic photo stands that I use to display my eyeshadow and highlighter palettes.
Some of the palettes are so pretty, they are almost like a work of art!
Next on our storage and organization list is this set of rolling drawers from Michaels. I’ve always wanted the Alex drawers from IKEA, but they are out of my budget. These drawers, however, play a very close second and are a steal.
They retail for $89.99, but are almost always on sale for anywhere between $45-$54 plus sometimes you can find coupons for an extra percentage off. I only paid $77, including shipping, for 2 drawers. The only downside is they are only 24″ tall, but I find that it doesn’t bother me now that they are built. If anything, it gives me extra “table” room.
I keep all of my shadow palettes, bronzers, blushes, highlighters, and lashes in them. I decorated the one set using my Cricut machine to say, “Be a unicorn in a field of horses.” Because I am a unicorn.
Lastly is my lighting setup. I want so badly to own the LED Vanity Studio Ring Light from Impressions Vanity, but at $299, it just is not in my budget. For this reason, I settled for the Neewer LED ring light that I purchased from Amazon for $89.99. Much more appealing price tag. This light is actually really nice. It has 2 controls that allows you to change the LED tone from cool to warm.
This ring light has made such a huge difference in the quality of my photos when sunlight is not available. It comes with a mount for my DSLR and I purchased a mount for my iPhone also for like $8. If you are on the fence about a ring light or are hesitant to spend a lot, go with this one for sure.

I really hope you guys found this article helpful and are encouraged to pursue your dream to build your own beauty room. I think it definitely can be done affordable and just take time to think about the elements you really want to include.
You may not need the lighting set up if you don’t take photos of your makeup, which will save even more money. You can even skip out on purchasing the desk and get a used table top to convert the drawer sets into a makeup vanity. Be creative and don’t limit yourself. Use what you can find to make your dreams come true.
